A Reflection on the Future

As we prepare for another presidential election, we will feel the collective anticipation, engage in debates, and have a fair share of apprehension. I'm reminding us to stay resilient and focused on the RIDC mission to unite the running industry to improve the inclusion, visibility, and access for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color, not letting uncertainty or fear get in the way of our collective work. The upcoming election season presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge is ensuring that this time does not distract us from our shared responsibilities or diminish our progress. The opportunity is to actively demonstrate the strength of our commitment to our shared goals, especially when they are most tested.

Imagine starting a race you trained for and then choosing to quitβ€”not due to a serious injury but because of concerns over how standing up for others might affect your reputation or business. This mindset contradicts the very reason you're engaged in this work in the first place. Our relentless dedication to fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse running industry (and by extension, our country) demands nonstop progress. It's about channeling our words, actions, dollars, and power toward creating the change we envision.

We must reflect on our role in shaping history in such pivotal moments. Our calling is to uphold our vision for a running industry that celebrates diversity, champions equity, and ensures inclusion for everyone. These aren't just ideals we aspire to; they are essential requirements for keeping our industry relevant and advancing with the kind of progress that's been the backbone of every significant movement creating equitable progress in our country.

Let's approach this season with a renewed sense of purpose, a deep respect for what we are called to do, and a firm belief in our collective power to keep making this running industry better for everyone. Our journey toward a more racially diverse and inclusive industry is an ultramarathon filled with hills, valleys, and long stretches that test our character. But we've got the endurance, heart, and soul to keep going because what we're building together is bigger than the moment.

These moments ask us: Are we deeply invested in making a difference for everyone, or is our commitment conditional? Reflecting on this reveals our intentions and actions in the coming months. To build on that, consider this: How can you leverage your voice and resources to contribute to the RIDC mission during this time?

As we move forward, let's lean on each other without shame or judgment, keep the conversations real and rooted, and stay fiercely committed to the vision that brought us here. With a sharp focus on the RIDC mission, no matter the challenges, we've got the collective strength to keep showing up for the communities we serve. Thank you for your ongoing commitment. The actions you're inspired to take next, rooted in our shared goals, are what will drive us toward a better running industry.

In service with you,
Kiera Smalls, Executive Director of the RIDC
