Know To Run: Yatika

The RIDC presents Know to Run: Yatika, hosted by Jordan Marie Whetstone of Rising Hearts and Abigail Sharpless of the RIDC, on Tuesday, October 3, at 3:30 p.m. EDT/12:30 p.m. PDT. This virtual workshop dives into how the running community can uplift native runners, go beyond land acknowledgments, and foster a kinship with Indigenous communities through collaborative, long-term work. This event encourages us to ask: “If we don’t have a space supportive of Indigenous peoples, who else is missing from this community? What can we do to help make running and outdoor spaces safe, inclusive, diverse, accessible, affordable, and supportive”?

During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to:

  • View a live screening of the short film Know to Run featuring Yatika Starr Fields, an Indigenous runner, artist, and advocate who was the recipient of the GU Energy Labs + Rising Hearts 2022 Western States Endurance Run (WSER) Race Entry

  • Learn about land acknowledgments, their importance, and what it means to go beyond them

  • Understand the necessity of including local Indigenous communities in conversations on making the running and outdoor community a more accessible and equitable place, and what this consultation process looks like

  • Engage in a Q&A following the screening, led by Jordan Marie Whetstone
