May is AAPI Heritage Month as well as Mental Health Awareness Month. The Black and AAPI communities have a shared history of cultural stigma against seeking resources for mental health, in part due to lack of access. This workshop aims to raise awareness of this topic and highlight what the running community can do to become a more inclusive resource for mental health.
During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to:
Learn about cultural stigmas in the Black and AAPI communities that lead to under-recognition of mental health issues and a lack of proper treatment
Identify how running can serve as an effective coping mechanism to help Black and AAPI individuals navigate mental health
Learn about opportunities the running community has to become more accessible and welcoming
Enjoy a guided meditation led by Meng Wang
This conversation will be guided through a Q&A with our three panelists:
Sharon Mosley: Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and ACE Health Coach, host of The Fit Talk wellness page on Instagram
George Rehmet: President of Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), special education teacher for students with severe mental health disabilities.
Jinghuan Liu Tervalon: Writer (Runners World, Women's Running, and more), mental health and DEI advocate
